the wild seasons archive

join our mail club for seasonal nature discoveries

The wild seasons archive is a monthly letter about the wild things we find.

With each volume we look for a seasonal plant that inspires us to write a recipe, take a photo, make a print and do something unexpected.

Every month

what to expect

For each edition we pick a local, seasonal specimen to add to our (and your) wild archive. A plant, an herb, a tree, something to see, touch and smell.

Our wild findings are transformed into:
  • a photograph developed with a plant-based tincture derived from that month’s flora
  • an artwork inspired by the form, color or structure of the specimen
  • a seasonal recipe
  • a little extra surprise depending on what we discover: a leaf for your herbarium or a review of a film related to that month’s theme, something unexpected
  • a personal letter connecting our field walks, artistic practices, myths associated with the specimen, or other musings

in the spirit of mottainai

The wild seasons archive is a monthly letter about the wild things we find in the wide world. It’s our journal for thinking through mottainai. It challenges us every month to get back into the wild, to stay connected and to hold onto that curiosity. With each volume we look for a seasonal plant that inspires us to write a recipe, take a photo, make a print and do something unexpected.

Production and shipping of the monthly letter are also opportunities to seek out sustainable options. These include sourcing recycled materials when possible, working with local, environmentally conscious printers instead of large-scale corporate ones, and prioritizing analog methods that make their physical costs visible and transparent.

All of these, we hope, can bring forth an abundance of connection and care for our shared ecosystem of touching and smelling, tasting and seeing. Connections that are harder to find these days. This is the minor act of rebellion Mottainai Labs hopes to inspire through the wild seasons archive.
